June 2011

June 2011 - Castle Mill Basin, Dudley – Rockface Stabilisation works.

Castle Mill Basin is part of the extensive 19th Century canal system which runs through some of the network of underground limestone mines in Dudley. One of the basin’s rock faces was determined by the Mines manager as being unstable and requiring support. Working with Dudley MBC and Geodesign we developed a design to construct a stepped, reinforced concrete roof support structure, built off a series of pin piles and capping beam constructed at the edge of the canal. The only access for plant and materials to the basin is by canal boat and so a mini-piling rig and other small plant have had to be used. The £330k contract which started in May is due to be complete at the end of July 2011.
