We have reached a major milestone on our first ‘Better Rivers’ spills improvement project for United Utilities and installed a new detention tank, which will store up to 120,000 litres of combined sewage during periods of heavy rainfall.
The tank was transported from its manufacturers SPEL Products in Shropshire to its new home in Alsager. It weighs 5.5 tonnes – the equivalent weight to half a bus – travelled as an abnormal load and was lifted in place by crane under a contract lift. It will be commissioned and begin working in the New Year.

This project is part of United Utilities commitment to a stronger, greener and healthier North West. The new tank will help to preserve the local watercourse which feeds into the River Wheelock.
Mark Mason, our Joint Managing Director, said: “We have made excellent progress on our first ever United Utilities AMP8 project. Our teams have worked efficiently on site to mitigate any programme challenges by resequencing activities to try and meet our budgetary targets. They have worked sensitively amongst the local community and we would like to thank residents for their patience and respect towards our people.
